Is happiness contented with materialistic appeasing of a third person? Can forced marriage get you a complete life? This book depicts the culture and attitude of Indian society towards a women. But where the book really scores is the in between where the trails and tribulations of a young bride in an alien family is depicted. I tried hard to keep going during the first half of the book. Arjun was my favorite character along with Janu’s Ammuma, “She said ‘pha’ which was only reserved for stray dogs”: I have read 2 other books of hers before and this definitely is my favourite.
The story recites the mayhem undergone by an Indian girl born in an orthodox family. It’s all too real, all too terrible, and all too worrisome for after reading the book, you’ll be forced to ponder upon how society hasn’t changed in all these centuries of advancement and how women are still subjugated by the patriarchal norms of society.
Reflecting on that, I can see that an author of fiction would most likely have piled jaixhree the abuse with a heavier spoon, probably had the husband beating his wife, the mother-in-law making her scrub the floor like Cinderella, and her own mother and grandmother forcing her back to her in-laws.
She arrives in England and spends a year studying and reliving lost moments with Arjun. Neither had any change visited the sad countenance of Kerala’s narrow minded “arranged marriage” custom. Being a ‘halfway-child’ taken from the author myself, I can very well relate to the predicaments of the protagonist as she tries to overcome the regional racism tactfully. One of these items is dispatched sooner than the other. Once I did realise, the absence of mobile phones, internet and other 21st century communication methods suddenly jumped out at me. Men women struggle existence and love life. This paper analyses how Janaki, a woman molded according to the dictates of Manusmrithi emerges as a new empowered woman who controls her destiny.
