Editorial Reviews From Library Journal While Apollonios’s long verse romance was originally scorned, it has grown in stature and remains the fullest account of the story of Jason, Medea, and the quest for the golden fleece and the only surviving epic of the Hellenistic period. This arginautica translation joins that of F.

The cloth version includes comprehensive notes and commentary. Green’s efforts represent both fine literature and scholarship, making this book appropriate for public and academic libraries.?

First of all, we are reading a translation and all that this implies. Second, Apollonios makes very frequent constant reference to mythology that argojautica audience evidently knew very well but I didn’t.

Third, Apollonios wrote for a Hellenistic Greek audience. Having gotten the above out of the way, I can only say that Peter Green does an excellent job of trying to bridge the gap.

The heightened language of his translation, admittedly, was sometimes difficult for me to follow, but, on the other hand, it was beautifully done, and I got the feeling argonauticw the translation was very true to the text, which I appreciated. Additionally, the page glossary in the back was excellent–I can’t imagine having read the story without it.

The storyline of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece was already over years old at the time of Argonauticq writing Euripides’ Medea was years earlier and all the characters and places were well known to his audience, so being able to quickly look up these places and people greatly enhanced my appreciation the story.

I also appreciated the maps. The Argo sails through much of the Hellenistic world and following the Argonautica’s progress was, frankly, exciting. Furthermore, there are pages of footnotes all collected in a section after the text, so when you get to a section of text that you think is either interesting or that argonxutica may be missing something, you can bet that Green has something more to say on the matter. Sometimes it was annoying to have to constantly flip back and forth to the notes, but if you simply read a section and then skim through the notes it is just as good, since many of the notes are very technical and you don’t have to disturb the flow of your read.

There are no footnote numbers in the text, only line numbers in the footnote section. Green’s introduction can probably be read afterwards.

It was a little too technical for me, thought I did read through it, and it concerns itself with describing literary world in which Apollonios wrote and how The Argonautica fit in. For any one but a serious scholar, I’d recommend reading something like the Wikipedia review of the Argonautica as preparation.

The story itself is exciting, and it felt very much like reading the Odyssey.

It’s a shame this is the only Hellenistic epic to survive, though there are a handful of Hellenistic novels that have, particularly Daphne and Chloe, which is on my short list.

I don’t know how they haven’t made a shot for shot remake of the Argonautika. It has the perfect mix of action and drama. And it totally could be a A-lister, starstudded, extravaganza. With a strong female lead! Don’t hesitate to elevate the modern cinematic culture. This was an important story in ancient Petfr, it should be as equally well known today. Marvel, DC, step aside.

Make way for the reemergence of classical mythology. These things resonate in our unconsciousness to this day.

The Avengers are all just playing out this script, a continual reboot. Give us the original! And we’ll eat it up. God bless the translator for this masterful work. I reviewed this work extensively and wanted something that would accurately reflect the magnitude of the mythos. And this guy did just that. I’m an average so and so just like those old Aegean fisherman that debated Jason and his Argonauts.

Stories just like we get into Hulk vs Ironman, or who backstabbed who in ‘Civil War’. Bravo sir slow, crescendoing hand clap. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Grefn phrasing and pacing are admirable in argknautica version of Apollonius’ ggreen. His introduction is illuminating, though he seems a bit too inclined along the way to settle scores with academic rivals–an unfortunate tendency that mars an otherwise brilliant presentation of helpful background information.

Simply the best translation of the Argonautika available in Engish. The translation was well done and quite readable. I was surprised, however when I ran out of translation and hit the extensive commentary at the back. As Agronautica am not a scholar of Greek or Roman writings or mythology the depth of the commentary was generally too much for me.

I would have preferred the split page method, where the text and commentary relevant to it appear on the same page. The glossary at the back was helpful to identify which god, goddess or hero was referred to.

The Argonautika should be as widely read as the Iliad and the Odyssey or for that matter the Aeneid. Before reading this particular version one should first study the structure of the work, completly discarding Green’s Introduction to it, unless, of course, you happen to be a working classical scholar! The translation of Apollonios Argonautika is an excellent read, made much more understandable by the excellent Glossary, which provides background information on all the characters and gods mentioned in the epic, and on geographical locations as well.

This glossary is either an excellent first source of information or as a refresher to what the reader might already know. Excellent maps detailing the route the Argonauts took are found in the back of the book. Although an excellent read, it’s not one that should be done at a rapid pace! See all 11 reviews.
