The cover of the Bantan paperback it came out around the bartheelme of the White Album is flat-out brilliant: But yet I imagine a disappointment afflicted many of its readers, similar to that suffered by eager Lolita barthelmd ten years previously — instead of porn they got deluged with high-end literary brilliance.

By around page we find that we are only half-listening. There was a most delicious anecdote told by a Member of Parliament — this was in a speech made in the House of Commons. You need to know that the chairman, whihe it were, of the debates is called the Speaker, and the present speaker, Mr John Bercow, is known for the smallness of his stature five feet five inches.

They were a great, great singles band but that is a terrible mess of a would-be concept album. In though, you thought you had to do a concept album. Even Frankie Valli thought this! And Donald Barthelme, lunatic short story writer nonpareil, thought he had barthemle write a novel.

This is done through Barthelme’s fragmentary rhetoric and discourse, by shifting perspectives from the seven “dwarves” or Snow White herself, as well as the wicked step-mother, “Jane.

Aug 09, Paquita Maria Sanchez rated it it was ok Shelves: A few months back, I freaked out about how great Donald is? Well, honeymoon’s over, as it appears we are now having our first fight. Not that I’m totally unwilling to support his decision to do whatever it is he has decided to do here don’t ask me to explainit’s just that the way he’s doing it is like fingernails on a chalkboard and I swear to godmom, I could just kill him right now, kill him dead forever and ever, I could take whige a life insurance policy and then pay some bik Remember me?

Not that I’m totally unwilling to support his decision to do whatever it is he has decided to do here don’t ask me to explainit’s just that the way he’s doing it is like fingernails on a chalkboard and I swear enow godmom, I could just kill him right now, kill him dead forever and ever, I could take out a life insurance policy and then pay some biker to and yes, I know, mom, I’m overreacting and in the heat of the moment snoww I should stop and breathe and reassess, and can I sleep over tonight?

It’ll just be one night. Look, I realize I’m only of about average intelligence. Maybe a wink above depending on the trial group, especially if a lot of them came from my home state of Oklahoma. I mean, I like to read lotsa books sometimes, and, on occasion, little snippets of the vast knowledge of various authors creeps under my skin and stays burrowed for a while.

All the same, it’s not like I go out and get a tan and suddenly fancy myself to be the sun. Or that I go out and get a tan at all, if you’ll pardon my left brain for its intrusion on this review-ish thing I have here.

To use another illustration: Just because I don’t get it doesn’t mean I never could get it. Here, the sleight of hand appears to be: The form completely disregards almost all function. In fact, the form reminded me of a Delia Deetz sculpture, and even my mediocre brain managed to conclude that we were supposed to find that shit ridiculous and callow, right?

Can I say pretentious? Sorry, I know it’s overused. Much like a lot of the writing techniques in this novel. Let me be clear about something else: And I don’t just mean “reading this book was difficult” or “reading this book made me feel stupid,” but I also don’t mean “reading this book was a complete waste of time.

However, the rest of what I was able to sift out made me feel like I was cheating or something. Or maybe more like I was being cheated, or we would both be in it together somehow if I let myself fall into that trap of double-backwards-reverse-cheat.

Like I was reading my horoscope and really having my socks knocked about with how accurate this psychic astrologer was in predicting my day. But hey, you know what? Considering I’m unemployed, I don’t even wake up until about noon lately, and I find myself disappointed by at least 4 things every day of my life.

Discerning a message in a lot of the garble in this story reminded me of that. It could go a hundred different ways for a billion different people. Not that this novel is cheap, greasy pizza. There’s some really great shit here. Unflowy shit, but like I said: I’m abandoning this diarrhea metaphor, and this review. Suffice it to say that this is a largely plotless meandering of brain matter with flakes of gold in it which you can find if you feel like digging for it.

I still love him despite his flaws, because he’s my mayun. Also, because it’s Barthelme, there are some truly hilarious passages. However, because I am a lazy 12 year old, I will only quote the one that made me laugh the hardest. Please just keep in mind that this is the sort of reviewer you are dealing with here. Adjust your decisions accordingly.

Jean-Paul Sartre is a Fartre. I do not have a problem with postmodern literature. A lot whife what I love most could reasonably be classified as such. It’s just that in this instance, it felt mechanical.

Garthelme some writing exercise that Barthelme never actually intended for anyone to take seriously though probably he did. Just wanted to make that clear. View all 27 comments.

Mar 05, Nathan “N. A certain seven men of course who would benefit from reading this here true history of Snow White. Recommended to Nathan “N. I recently watched the movie Mirror, Mirror. I was tempted to check in with the worlds of Disney and Hollywood and ETC to see how much of this stuff they still get wrong.

Let me tell you. In Mirror, Mirror you will barrthelme in action the manner in which irony has been turned back against those who first thought they might use it to dismantle certain ideologies. My god, that patriarchal shit whife even worse now.

So in order to cleanse my heart of hearts I turned to Donald Barthelme in order to get the real low-down on the real story about what actually happened with Snow White and those Seven several men. Whitf laid out in truth.

Probably not fit dhite children or dreamers of a saving prince, etc. On a personal note, it would seem that I have recently fallen into a trap of sorts wherein I find myself reading many a book severely decorated with white space and drawings and photographs and all kinds of things which the paper is doing other than carrying words. Now this thing again from Barthelme and even bartnelme we speak yet another silly book by Federman. View all 10 comments.

Amazon has this seemingly simple explanation for the book: The hi-jinks Barthelme includes within the novel are sometimes maddening, playful, and inventive for sure I Caveat before the review: I’m not sure if they all worked.

Again, this may be that my mind is too small, underdeveloped, to understand it completely. What I can say is:
