Discussion in ‘ Tube Audio ‘ started by rajuncajunNov 30, Log in or Sign up. Hi all, I have a vintage pioneer receiver that uses 6GW8 output tubes, which are no longer manufactured.
I see that the 6BM8 is a very similar tube with different pinout.

Would it be possible to use them as a 6GW8 substitute without doing any modifications besides changing socket pinout? This could really help some us with amps that use these tubes if it would work. I’ve attached data sheets for both tubes. Looks like the only sub for the 6BM8, is the 6HC8.
There is no sub listed elc86 the 6GW8.
Why do you need to sub? My Telefunken Princess Radio uses datashee of these for output. I just perused a quad of early NOS Phillips there. Substituting 6BM8s for 6GW8s has been done, in some jukebox and organ amp retro-fits.
Yes, it will work. Some will claim that you lose just a tad of power, but probably not anything significant The only change that might have to datasheett done, may be the cathode bias resistor value Change the value to put the 6BM8 into about the same idle current as the 6GW8 originally would have GordonWDec 1, Jim McShaneDec 1, Well sure I guess because alot of european radios used them there may be a following.
I dont think its to the point of scrounging subs though. I thought that was a decent price for NOS Telefunkens. Id say buy adtasheet to last your lifetime, maybe sets and forget about it. Since it was more popular in Europe, the best place to look would be the Bay or even one of the Eurobay sites. I counted over 30 available on US Ebay right now.

The real danger here is Once you go Telefunken, Valvo, or Mullard you’ll never go back. But new Russian 6BM8s are still available Tom BavisDec 1, Well, in all honesty a have a couple of backup sets of used but good 6GW8’s, but I figured if it was possible to switch over to a current production tube why not?
It’s just annoying to know that there’s a finite supply of a given tube out there.
But I guess that comes with the territory when you’re talking about vintage tube stuff. Thanks for the advice! I can sure relate to the feeling of hard to find tubes though.
One of my favorite old guitar amps has an obscure set but over time Ive scrounged Four full NOS sets. They’ll ddatasheet by one by one.
6GW8 substitute tube 6BM8?
Very nice people to deal with, honest, quick and reasonably priced. Also, I suspect that we collectors will not be wearing out a set of output tubes in our lifetime. Let’s face it, we love to rotate our stuff, don’t you too? And, we often will find an “Update” vatasheet our collection.
GordonWDec 3, If they’re used they’re very low hours. No burn marked or anything of the like, shiny looking plates datasneet pins etc I haven’t tested them yet and probably won’t until I need them. At which point I’ll see if I can find 4 that match out of my spares.
You’re right about not going through a lot of output tubes though.

From what I hear they usually last a couple thousand hours or more, which would take me years to rack up. My datasjeet system is solid state and it takes the high-hour load of movies and background music during gatherings etc You must log in or sign up to reply here. Share This Page Tweet.
