Eric rated it really liked it Feb 14, I do not have a dominant preference for a particular iteration of the Greyhawk setting, although I generally thought less of the From the Ashes era in terms of tone than any other. The game provides a list of random encounters for each dungeon level, generic dungeon maps left clear of content, and numerous side quests to help the DM along the way and keep the adventure flowing.

Under an oath with Zagig, Mordenkainen vowed never to enter the depths of Castle Greyhawk, but through researching Zagig’s tomes, Cashle only recently found a possible clue to Robliar’s betrayal hidden deep inside the ruins. All these excusions are necessary to the adventure while also being nice tips of the hat to the World of Greyhawk setting more generally.

You see, the PCs have an appointment with the God-Trap, Iuz and the false Iggwilv and they cannot be allowed to derail the plot either. The PCs discover that Vayne holds a secret weapon against the Old One in the form of a simulacrum of Iggwilv, Iuz’s witch-queen mother.

In fact, entire dungeon levels are left unmapped and the DM is encouraged to improvise their own encounters to fill in areas not covered by the game with their own content. Much of the action takes place in the dungeons of Castle Greyhawk. When the PCs finally arrive at the gates of Castle Greyhawk, they find that the only way inside is through the front gates czstle Zagig’s Tower of War, where the Mad Archmage once housed his considerable army of servitors, soldiers, and attack monsters.
Lists with This Book. In the process they learn a great deal about Zagig’s past and the obsessions that bade him to dig deeper into the earth. This chapter provides a rough outline of the castle’s history and structure, with a basic map of its levels and some suggestions on what dangers and treasure each contains.
At the culmination of his research, in the shadow of a dozen lost companions, Mordenkainen finally discovered Zagig’s Prison, an entire dungeon level designed to imprison nine demigods encountered by Zagig on his travels.
The fearless swordsman chased adventure with the enthusiasm of an addict, often venturing into Castle Greyhawk on highly dangerous solo missions, facing every challenge with a wide grin and a clever rejoinder. Only by uniting the three fragments of the Obelisk shard and destroying Zagig’s Prison — thus releasing Iuz from captivity once more — can the PCs destroy the empowered Iggwilv and escape from the dungeons with their lives.
Vayne is not confident of success and, having failed Iuz twice before, fears for his life if the attack on Greyhawk is not successful. These days it is home to the cunning General At-Ur Rehmat, who has turned several levels into the barracks and training ground for an army of enslaved savage humanoids set to assault the City of Greyhawk at the behest of the demon-god Iuz the Evil. If Mordenkainen could find the deity trap, so could someone else. But Mordenkainen knew that the archmage’s prison would not last forever.

This helps advance the adventure grejhawk at all. The adventure makes clear, however, nothing the PCs do will effect Iuz in the slightest. Making matters still worse, if the PCs try to stop Iuz once he appears, Iuz will casually smack them down and then, uncharacteristically, let them live to go about their business unhurt.

Give me a traditional module set-up, it’s much easier to read and run without question. The list is extensive – First, ERCGH contains a defacto gazetteer of the City of Greyhawk to include a revised city map that makes the city seem more densely packed and thus realistic.
