Really great guy, very interested in this topic writing systems and scribal traditions which makes class and lectures that much more interesting. Definitely LOTS of reading and can be challenging to follow sometimes if you’re not familiar with everything which I wasn’t at first. But you definitely learn a lot and it’s a cool class.

Overall, I found his class and teaching style to be redundant and outdated. It’s crickets when he asks a question. More concerningly to me, though, are his casual sexist and homophobic remarks throughout the semester. It made me uncomfortable to be in the classroom. Incredibly passionate and knowledgeable.

Super passionate about his students and the topic he javieg. He packs in a lot of information and expects you to know it, but he teaches incredibly well and will go over any information that you need. Be ready to commit a lot of time, but his passion keeps lectures enthralling. I have never seen someone more interested in the material as well as the learning of his students.

Also he is a delight to listen to. English isn’t even his first language and he speaks it more eloquently than i do. Don’t take it if you’re not up for reading long articles every other night. The class discussions are intriguing, but occasionally dull. He can be confusing at times, and the class can seem really hard, but if you stick with it he will stick with you.

All he wants is for people to be as excited as he is, and I have loved having him as a teacher in multiple classes! You really can learn a ton urciv him, and he takes an interest in his students. He really expects you to do those readings! He’s absolutely wonderful when teaching a small class, he really makes you feel like he’s genuinely interested in what jafier have to say, and when the class is really into the discussion, his joy in teaching is obvious.

Krcid class made me sure that I had chosen the right major for me. Did I walk into the same room as everybody else? I found him to be incredibly boring and although he gives off the caring feel, I really regret my interactions with him. Awesome teacher who knows a lot about what he teaches. He can be boring, but he can also make boring topics interesting. Very passionate about the subject and genuinely cares about the students. Best prof I’ve had. Seriously cares about the subject and his students.

Urci is the man! He teaches really interesting stuff and often has a thrilling way of presenting it. I learned very little from this class, we barely had enough field time.

In groups we had no guidance aside from that of the group uurcid and the lectures were not very interesting. Urcid is obviously very passionate about the subject but he was not a good teacher for this class.

Javier Urcid named Jane’s Chair Professor of Latin American Studies

The syllabus was useless we were assigned stuff at urci last min. Urcid is so nice, and cracks anthro jokes like calling people “sharp as a sacrificial knife”. He really cares about students and is deeply passionate about the material.

This class is really helpful for learning anatomy later because it gives you literally the skeleton on which to build further anatomy study on. Didn’t learn a single thing from this class. Lectures were boring and not necessary to do well on the papers.

Take out other teachers if possible. Used the word germane a javler.

I enjoyed his class and he graded very leniently. Javy is my hero. He opened my eyes and cultivated my love for anthro. I have never seen a professor who was so excited to be teaching about his subject, and that enthusiasm was contagious. He is the most organized professor I’ve ever had.

The material is hard but he makes it seem a lot easier. He offers neat classes, so take one.
