Hey guys, here’s my latest project, a Ligeti Stratos. This model is based on the real Stratos designed by Charles Ligeti. It’s an ultralight kit. After taxiing trials and several low level hops 5 to 10 feet above the ground, the pilot commenced the takeoff for the aircraft’s first test flight. This aircraft was intended to be the production version of the “Stratos” aircraft. The prototype version had successfully flown some hours.

Discussion in ‘ Scratchbuilding! Ligeti Stratos Scratchbuild Discussion in ‘ Scratchbuilding! Hey guys, here’s my latest project, a Ligeti Stratos. This model is based on the real Stratos designed by Charles Ligeti.

It’s an ultralight kit built airplane. I’m drawn to the unusual designs. I’ve been wanting to build one of these for a long time. No plans were to be found as far as I could see so I decided to do a total scratch build from ground zero. This is my first plane to build without plans. I got my dimensions from pictures and drawings from the web.

It’s made of DT foam with the paper removed. The fuselage is 4 layers thick with some 3mm carbon rods in for strength and some fiberglass strips also. Since the DT foam without the paper is so flimsy, I used two layers with a 6mm rod for a spar in the wings. The 6mm is probably overkill but it’s all the long pieces of carbon I had left. Also it’s hard to tell but there’s a slight dihedral in the top wing.

It’s plenty strong and I’ll have to see what the AUW is when it’s done. Hopefully under 10 ounces.

Here’s a few pics of the real plane and my progress so far. I have to do the wingtip joiners, and elevator and the ailerons and servos and electronics. Then we get to see if it will fly. Wtratos to come soon. LugetiMay 28, WildthingMay 29, FlyteTimeMay 29, Flybyknight22Jun 1, Wildthing and bogusbandit56 like this. Just a little more progress on her. I’m waiting on a little 25g Emax kv motor and some 5g servos and I’ll be able to finish it out.

The weight as it is now is only g so straros gonna come in lighter than I thought. FlyteTimeJun 1, SukhoiLoverdangermouse63 nova and 2 others like this.

WildthingJun 1, SukhoiLover63 nova and Flybyknight22 like this. That plane looks really cool How do ilgeti ailerons work?

Are the back ones like a elevator and the front ones for turning? SukhoiLover and Wildthing like this. Thank you kindly nova. Actually it’s the straots way around. Parts should be here tomorrow. Maiden possibly in the afternoon? FlyteTimeJun 3, SukhoiLover63 nova and Wildthing like this. I maidened the Stratos this afternoon and I was unhappy with the flight characteristics.

I have plenty of power with my setup but I had very little roll and pitch control. I think it might be due to the fact that the wings are double layer paperless DT foam and my elevators and ailerons are single layer hinged to the top surface of the wings.

I’ve got a good angle of the surfaces on the top of the wing but on the bottom I don’t have as much extension. I think I’ll double them up and put a nice taper on the trailing edge and see if it makes it flyable. ligetl

FlyteTimeJun 10, How did you get on with this model or did you set it aside? Your control surfaces may need to be enlarged if the plane flies slowly Another way to make the controls more responsive would be to link the control surfaces via mixes sratos the transmitter. Or a more simple way is stfatos a V-Tail mix on the rear control surfaces so that they act as elevons.

Hey BB, yeah the Stratos got put on the back burner as I haven’t been feeling well with a serious health issue I’m dealing with. I’m slowly coming back to where I was a while back with my interest level in the hobby.

I love the design of the airplane and I will try again soon to give her another go. Thanks for your interest my friend. FlyteTimeJul 29, Ligrti Ian for the kind words. They found some suspicious spots on my liver a few months back and I’m going for another MRI scan next week to see about the progression.

But I’m still here and I’m still a flyin’, lol. FlyteTimeJul 30, You must log in or sign up to reply here. Share This Page Tweet. Your name strxtos email address:
